2023 Garden Summary
All in all, I am quite happy with what my garden produced this year, in particular since I was not able to tend to it for the vast majority of the growing season. What grew exceptionally well was my rhubarb, chives and parsley, all which I had brought with me when I moved. Produce that did well despite being neglected and which promises a great yield next year when it is looked after properly: peas, beans, tomatoes, potatoes, lettuce and onions. Some of my potatoes were huge - two meals from one potato huge. I also found more things while digging up my potatoes - part of a chain and part of a jaw!
My spinach and kale did
not come at all, both which normally are easy to grow. The biggest
surprise was finding carrots at the end of the season when I was pulling out
the weed which was a good 18 inches tall and about to go into seed. I had
planted my carrots twice and they showed no sign of growing when I last had a
chance to look at them. Everything was planted too late since I was starting
from scratch and had to first dig out a garden plot. By the first frost
on September 20th I had only picked four roma tomatoes and a basketful of
cherry tomatoes. Luckily the weeds that had overgrown the plants
sheltered the bottom tomatoes from that first frost and I was able to get
additional produce. I also picked green tomatoes on the vine and let them
ripen inside, placing them on black trays in the south window for a few weeks.
