Smokey Days
Forest fires are devastating and Canada has a lot of them every year. On Saturday we were shrouded in smoke and it was hard to be outside. The air is still hazy today but at least the smoke is not as heavy. I'm not sure which fire it is from, maybe from Quebec. The sun shines red through the smoke.
A few months ago I had ordered some trees and shrubs from Ontario Native Plants. I was impressed at how well they were packaged. They arrived at the end of April but I waited until the end of May to plant them to avoid frost. Even then one day I left early for an out of town trip and we must have had a harder frost that morning as the tops on one sugar maple and the paper birch are not doing well. The trees are protected by an open ended pail, mostly against the beavers and ground hogs who would love to munch on them, but the tops of the trees were sticking above the edge of the pail, regardless they should bounce back as the rest of the tree is healthy. Planting more trees and shrubs will help clean the air.
The robins have left the nest and the hummingbirds are enjoying the lilac bush.
I discovered my well may not be where I thought it might be. The septic paperwork indicated a drilled well behind the barn but a neighbour said it is behind the house about 6 feet down, which is more in line with what the real estate folks indicated. There is no official record of either possibility.
