Finding Things While Gardening
My focus these days is finding the best locations for various gardens: vegetable garden (maybe more than one), fruit garden, multiple flower gardens. The soil is SUPER clay in most areas. It reminds me of high school art class when we worked with clay to make pottery. I can probably make bricks out of it! The compost/manure pile behind the barn is still mostly frozen, but I took what I could off of it to help build up workable dirt. The flower gardens closer to the road have about 8" of top soil and hopefully this will be fine. I took plants with me from my other house and need to get them out of their pots as some of them are growing root mold. I found interesting things while digging in the ground: lots of nails and bits of plastic, some large metal pieces and large bones.
Last week I took my first trip
to the township garbage dump and found it impactful. It was a little odd
throwing my garbage bags down into the marsh and I felt like it was wrong to
contaminate the earth like this. I realized that services like garbage
pick up separate people from what really happens to all the items left at the
curbside for 'others' to take care of. Collected recycling items I still
need to figure out what to do with and I am determined to change my lifestyle
to not use so many packaged items.
Nice finds, with closer pics Jamie might be able to tell you ages-were the nails square or round
ReplyDeleteI found both round and square nails, mostly round though. Right now I am putting everything in a bucket and will sort through it later. I am sure I will find lots more things and will post if anything of particular interest comes up!
